How-To: Save a spreadsheet as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet - OpenOffice.org Calc
- To save a spreadsheet as a Microsoft Excel file, first click on "File"
- Next, on the menu that appears, click on "Save As..."
- The "Save As" dialogue window should appear.
- Now, in the "save as type" field click on this down arrow.
- A list of file formats should appear. Click here on the "Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP (.xls)" option.
- Great! This should save the spreadsheet in Excel format. Just click on save.
- A warning should appear telling you that some formatting and content may not be saved if you save this into the excel file format.
- If you want to save the spreadsheet in excel format, you have to click on "Yes."
- Great! As you can see the name of the spreadsheet has the extension ".xls" indicating that it is has been saved as an Excel file.
- Congratulations! You have learned to save spreadsheets as Excel files.

Caution
Care must be taken when saving Calc spreadsheets into Excel format. Some features like elements with Visual Basic Macros aren't yet full supported by Calc and will cease to work or not save properly. There are also many other formatting features that may not be carried over into the excel format.
To remedy most of these problems always update your copy of OpenOffice whenever possible.
